10 sessions x 90 minutes
Tuesday - Dec 2, 9, 16 | Jan 6, 13, 20, 27 | Feb 3, 10, 24
Build something simple, then turn the dial—faster, stronger, farther. Each class starts with a quick teacher demo, then runs like an arcade of levels built from one daily challenge. Pick from our library of LEGO and Technic parts, test until it works, get teacher advice on why, then team up with friends.
Receive challenge reports after each class explaining core learnings and photos of each of your student’s builds.
Example Classes this Session:
- Weight-Lifting Quad Bot: Students start by building a four-leg robot, then level-up through gear ratios and leg linkages to hoist a small load to build an intuition for torque versus speed and linkages.
- Mini-Crane Lift: Students start by building a simple crane, then level-up through carrying larger weights and weirdly-shaped cargo to build an intuition for how pulleys, rope paths, and torque work.
- Grip-Rolling Alligator: Students start by building a rolling alligator, then level-up through swapping wheels/feet and shifting weight to roll straighter and farther to build an intuition for traction and center of mass.
- Towering Elevator: Students start by building a one-story elevator, then level-up through adding a counterweight and improving stability to move between floors without falling to build an intuition for balance.
Class Structure:
- Kickoff build: Students start with the same simplified build while the teacher explains the mechanism and the day’s goal.
- Engineering level-ups: After the first run, students are given added levels (heavier loads, longer spans, new gear ratios) to build intuition around the core learning.
- Creative level-ups: Students personalize their builds—mini versions, themed scenes, decorations—while keeping the mechanism working.
- Team collaboration: As kids progress, they are also given twists on later challenges that work with multi-student teams.
Skills Developed:
- Learn biomechanical and motorized mechanisms that matter like gears, pulleys and belts, center of mass and stability, and more.
- Students will learn the engineering design thinking process, from defining a clear goal, planning a simple first build, running a fair test and observing results, changing a variable, rebuilding, and explaining why the new version works better.
Awards and Accreditations:
- Lando is a WASC-accredited program with multiple awards—like STEM.org Best in STEM, Academics’ Choice, Parents’ Picks, and more.
- We are ESSA Tier IV certified through academic partnerships with Leanlab and Northwestern, affirming measurable learning outcomes for our classes.
Safety and Communication:
- You’ll receive sign-in/sign-out texts to know your engineer is safe.
- Easily contact us via text or email if you need to contact your student during class or for feedback on how we can help your kid thrive.

Example Classes this Session:
• Reef Runner: Start with a simple collect-and-avoid game, then add shells to score and gentle hazards to dodge—learn how to code controls, events, and if-then checks.
• Jelly Jumper: First code a sprite that jumps between platforms, then level up with moving platforms and coins—driven by a gravity loop and a simple coin-counter state.
• Cleanup Quest: Catch trash, dodge fish, then increase spawn rates—all while learning conditionals, randomness, and timers.
Class Structure:
• Introductory game: Class starts with a quick, whole-group game to reinforce the day’s concept.
• Kickoff project: Students begin from the same starter project while teachers explain the goal; after each level, they can play a 30-second example for inspiration.
• Coding level-ups: Add levels (timer, score, lives, power-ups, enemy behavior) to deepen the day’s lesson and make a game friends actually want to play.
• Creative level-ups: Personalize with unlocked sprites, backgrounds, and sounds—while keeping it playable.
• Team collaboration: As kids progress, they’re encouraged to swap with classmates to playtest their games and integrate peer feedback.
Skills & Take-aways:
- Learn core computer-science ideas like sequencing, events, loops, conditionals, variables, collisions, timers, and simple state in Scratch
- Students learn a game design process, from defining a clear goal, building a simple first version, playtesting with peers, and rebuilding from feedback.
- You’ll receive sign-in/sign-out texts to know your game designer is safe.
- A local coordinator is reachable by text during class for urgent needs or via email for feedback on how we can help your kid thrive.
- iPads run our Scratch-based app on local Wi-Fi (no web browsing, games, or other applications).

Get ready to dive into the exciting world of science with our National Science Bowl® prep class! Managed by the U.S. Department of Energy, this nationwide competition challenges students with a fast-paced, thrilling question-and-answer format covering biology, chemistry, physics, Earth science, energy, and math.
In this hands-on class, students will explore key scientific concepts through experiments, gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific process. Each session begins with an engaging lesson, followed by hands-on experiments where students will develop hypotheses, conduct investigations, record observations, and analyze results in their lab notebooks. The class wraps up with an interactive quiz to reinforce learning in a fun and competitive way.
Our program is designed to ignite a passion for science while building critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Through mock challenges, expert coaching, and interactive practice sessions, students will gain the confidence and knowledge to excel in one of the nation’s most prestigious science competitions!
