DPIE staff presents Dublin Elementary School with a check for participating in DPIE’s Afterschool Program.
DPIE is on pace to donate $11,000 to participating school for the Fall & Winter sessions. Spring enrollment opens mid-February. In the Fall of 2016, DPIE piloted it’s first ever Afterschool Program at Dougherty Elementary School. With the assistance of Dougherty administrators, Brett Nelson and Heather Ghereben, six Dougherty teachers were recruited to “teach their passion.” They designed STEAM classes which were offered to Dougherty students during after school hours one day each week for 10 weeks and a total of 96 students enrolled in those courses. The program was a huge success, caught on quickly and expanded to three more schools (Amador, Kolb, Frederiksen) in the Winter session and then added a fifth school (Murray) in the Spring of 2017. At the end of the first year, a total of 621 students participated in afterschool classes at the five participating elementary schools and DPIE donated $7,700 of the proceeds back to the PFC, student government and the school principal to support school programs.
Record Enrollment Leads to Record Donations
Thanks to that record growth, DPIE will generate a total of $11,000 in donations to Dublin schools for the Fall & Winter sessions alone.
This year, thanks to the support of Dublin Elementary Principal, Lauren McGovern, Dublin became the sixth school in the district to offer the DPIE afterschool Program to their students. Fall classes met with immediate acceptance by Dublin Elementary families and this Winter a total of 74 Dublin students have already enrolled in one of five Winter courses now in session there. DPIE saw record enrollment in Fall courses as 336 students enrolled in the program. That record was quickly broken again in the 2018 Winter session when 410 students enrolled in one or more of the 28 STEAM course offerings. Just two sessions into its second year, the Afterschool Program has already exceeded last year’s enrollment numbers with 746 students participating in DPIE classes. Thanks to that record growth, DPIE will generate a total of $11,000 in donations to Dublin schools for the Fall & Winter sessions alone.
Afterschool Program Expands to John Green Elementary School This Spring
After school courses will be introduced at Green Elementary School this Spring which will mark the first time that DPIE classes will be offered at all seven DUSD elementary schools. Planning is currently under way and we hope to open enrollment on February 8th with a total of 50 course offerings district-wide. The DPIE website is currently being updated and parents will soon be able to read the course descriptions for courses being offered at their home school.
DPIE Supplements Courses With Outside Partnerships
To supplement courses being offered by DUSD teachers, DPIE has partnered with several outside organizations to offer courses to Dublin students this Spring. Courses include classes taught by the Pacific Chess Academy, Kenn Adams Adventure Theater, BollyNaach Dance Company, Café Art, Monkey Bear Yoga and Gurus Education Speech & Debate. DPIE’s goal is to offer programs that are stimulating, fun and educational while fostering student interest and enthusiasm for learning.
