Actors Workshop On the Air: Create & Perform in an Old-Fashioned Radio Play!

Course Description:


This book club style course is based on the Common Core Standards, driven to create an engaging and educational way to promote reading and create lifelong readers with great books to read and keep. Through reading, students will hone-in and perfect comprehension skills which will positively impact their reading and writing skills along with enhancing their career and college readiness. Students will focus on comprehension through main and key ideas and details, text structure, context clues, along with text development and integration of their knowledge and ideas; all to strengthen and build their presentation of knowledge.  This course encourages students who love reading (or haven't discovered they do just yet) to engage in meaningful discussions while sharing thoughts, feelings and higher order thinking in small group, whole group and individual discussions.  You will be reading "Look Both Ways" by Jason Reynolds which we will send you prior to the course beginning.

Course Description:
For the last four years, chess has been the most in-demand program offered in the DPIE After School Program. The beginner class is designed for students who have not played chess before. This course will teach kids the fundamental principles of the game. Students will learn how to move pieces, to capture, attack, and deliver checkmate.  Lessons are fun and easy to follow, and consist of high-quality instruction, game analysis, tournament games, and games against the instructor. Our unique training platform allows kids to make moves on the virtual chess board, communicate with each other, and solve puzzles during the chess session. Since all games are stored in the database, kids and parents can revise them at any time.  The use of modern technology makes the learning of process easy, fast and fun! All you need is a laptop or desktop with audio and visual access. After the first month of instruction, students will have the opportunity to participate in Online Beginner Chess Tournaments on Friday afternoons.

Course Description:
In this 10-week class we will learn about the elements in art, Read/Listen to a short storybook emphasizing the different elements of art. Student will then create a work of art around the newly learned element or principle of art.  Examples of elements include:  Line and Pattern, Shape, Color, Contrast and Emphasis, rhythm and movement.  Examples of books:  Lines that Wiggle, Shape Shift, Mouse Paint or Pantone, Beautiful Blackbird.  Examples of Art Pieces:  Insect Drawing, Winter Tree Silhouette, Primary Color Boats.  Examples of Art Materials/Medium:  Water Color, Sharpie, Collage.

Course Description:
With Distance Learning becoming our “new normal” students will be on the computers more than ever before and asked to use google applications in multiple ways. In this course, students will be practicing what will be used in their “classroom” this fall. Students will learn how to use and manipulate google docs, google slides, google forms and other google applications. I will walk students through how to create and share documents, how to edit and import images, videos, and audio. We will work on typing, editing, and publishing. This course is intended to provide students a place to practice online tools and ask questions that will help them be productive and successful in their distance learning classrooms. Students will need to be able to login to their Dublin google account given by their classroom teacher and access to a laptop or chromebook with video and audio abilities.

Paint Your Own Ceramic Wind Chime

Course Description:
This class will explore a new painting technique each week (sponge, splatter paint, tape...).  The painting techniques will be practiced first with watercolor paint and paper, then we will paint a piece of the wind chime ceramic using the same technique.  At the end of the 10 weeks we will assemble the pieces into a working wind chime.

In preparation for each lesson, your student will need an artwork space, set of paints, paper towel, bowl of water, pencil, scrap paper, colored markers and access to their computer to participate.


There will be a supply kit that will need to be picked up prior to the class starting.  Included in that kit will be:

Students will learn the usefulness of ratios, geometry, mass, volume, and area.

Prerequisite: An enthusiasm for solving problems that have more than one correct answer, a willingness to be challenged, and the ability to minimize the online virtual live class to work on another document then return to the video meeting, ie toggling between two tabs or splitting a screen.

Course Description:
Writing is one of the main forms of communication, yet it’s also one of the most dreaded subjects for students to learn. Through this session of writing, students will learn how to communicate more effectively with the written word. We will introduce narrative writing this fall and the course will include, how to tell a story and build suspense, telling stories from different points of view, and the use of figurative language. We will also focus on the technical parts of writing such as sentence form and grammar. This course will change focus and emphasis from session to session and year to year so students will always learn new writing skills.

Yoga literally means “union”. Yoga unites mind, body and breath. Yoga’s benefits are immense. There are numerous physical benefits such as increased strength and flexibility. Practicing yoga poses also develops patience and concentration. Most importantly, the connection between mind and body are deepened in the practice of yoga. Stress is greatly reduced with a regular yoga practice. We are faced with an ever-changing world. Yoga gives children the tools to cope with their emotions and feel in control of themselves. Each class we will explore a principle of yoga; nonviolence, compassion, truthfulness, determination and inner peace. These are big ideas that play a role in our ever-changing lives. Yoga gives us the ability to approach these big concepts through asana (yoga poses) and pranayama (breathing exercises). We will also use part of our time to journal and reflect on our practice. My hope is that your children find a sense of empowerment which sparks joy and lifelong desire to live a balanced life.
