Through a fun series of theater games, acting exercises and scripted scene work, this introductory acting class teaches the fundamentals of the actor’s craft. Students explore the “three tools of the actor” – voice, body and imagination – as they learn how to create characters, interpret scripts and perform for an audience. The class teaches true theater skills such as stagecraft, emotionally truthful acting, and professional theater etiquette, while encouraging creativity and inspiring the imagination. The class culminates with a free workshop presentation of scenes and monologues for an invited audience.

Take it once or take it again and again! Students are encouraged to repeat the program several times. While the overall objectives remain the same, there are always new games, new activities and new performance scenes to keep the program varied and interesting. As students progress through successive iterations of the program, they continue to work on more sophisticated material in order to ensure that their skills continue to grow and that they are being appropriately challenged.

They’ll master key concepts — such as sequencing, variables, conditionals, and events — all while enjoying the process of building games for themselves and their friends. We provide laptops loaded with our custom, distraction-free version of Scratch and send regular updates to keep parents informed about each student’s progress.

Whether your child has cheer experience or they are brand new to cheerleading they are welcome to participate in this fun and exciting course. Cheerleading is a great way to build confidence, teamwork abilities, and memorization skills.

Ms. Sleek comes to this course with 15 years of cheerleading experience. She began her cheerleading days in elementary school where it slowly became a passion for her. She said that learning cheerleading at an early age provided her a jump start to the basics of cheerleading before she graduated to competitive cheer in middle and high school. Ms. Sleek currently serves as the STUNT cheer coach at Dublin High School and she is excited for the opportunity to work with your child.

Do you have a budding engineer in your family and a child who just can’t get enough of building and problem solving? Then the Advanced Lego Robotic course might be just the class you’re looking for. Working in teams, students will participate in an interactive engineering design process and will be challenged to construct more complex and dynamic robot projects that enable them to successfully complete a series of engineering challenges.

The Advanced Robotics course is designed for students who have already participated in our Beginning Lego & Robotics course as taught in the DPIE After School Program or a student who has already taken a basic robotics course and learned or is familiar with the basics of block coding.

Challenges will include:

  1. Obstacle Course Learning
Objectives: How to utilize motors, sensors and other Lego parts to build a moving robot and program.
Goal: Kids will design a robot that will complete the obstacle course involving bridge, wall, river and other obstacles, in order to rescue a stranded individual and bring them back to base.

  2. Mouse Maze
Learning objectives: Learn how to take input from the environment and take action based on sensory data.
Goal: Students will have to design and build a robot that will be able to take and respond to input from its environment and find its way through the maze.

Come and learn Hindustani Classical Vocal Music (singing) from scratch! Hindustani Classical Music has a rich tradition, which originated in South Asia and it can now be enjoyed in all corners of the world. This is a great opportunity for kids because, in addition to being a fun activity, learning music has multiple benefits including the following:

  • It helps develop the parts of the brain related to language and reasoning
  • It relieves stress and teaches children to focus
  • It can improve children’s social skills and boost their confidence

This Hindustani Classical Vocal Music course does not need any prior knowledge of or training in any kind of music. At the very beginning of the course, we give significant emphasis on perfecting the Seven Swaras (i.e., musical notes). This is done by learning to sing repetitive patterns of the Seven Swaras called Alankars. Students are taught to coordinate their singing with the Harmonium played by the teacher, along with the Electronic Tabla for percussion support. After perfecting the Swaras, the students will follow a simple structure, which is especially geared towards new learners. Under this structure students learn to sing a Sargam Geet or a Swara Malika, first. As students become more adept and comfortable with the structure of Classical singing, we introduce them to the five-note scale of Raga Bhupali. Towards the end of the course students will learn a Chota Khayal (i.e., a complex composition) in Raga Bhupali.

The last class in the session will include a vocal music performance by the student group which can be enjoyed by friends and family.

It’s laughter, learning and limelight with the After School Drama Club’s The Actor’s Workshop!
