Kids will have a great time in this hands-on Robotics course while also being introduced to various aspects of mechanical, electrical, and computer science Engineering. Students will be introduced to a block coding language in order to provide an intuitive understanding for programming as well as provide easy to follow instructions to build many simple machines.

In every class session students will use Lego pieces to build figures like airplanes, alligators, a smart spinner, etc., and they will be introduced to mechanical and electrical mechanisms like sensors, gears, pullies.  They will then use block programming to help their fit all these pieces together to create their own moving project.

Note: Students can enroll in this class two times without repeating activities.

Do you have a budding engineer in your family and a child who just can’t get enough of building and problem solving? Then the Advanced Lego Robotic course might be just the class you’re looking for. Working in teams, students will participate in an interactive engineering design process and will be challenged to construct more complex and dynamic robot projects that enable them to successfully complete a series of engineering challenges.

The Advanced Robotics course is designed for students who have already participated in our Beginning Lego & Robotics course as taught in the DPIE After School Program or a student who has already taken a basic robotics course and learned or is familiar with the basics of block coding.

Challenges will include:

  1. Obstacle Course Learning
Objectives: How to utilize motors, sensors and other Lego parts to build a moving robot and program.
Goal: Kids will design a robot that will complete the obstacle course involving bridge, wall, river and other obstacles, in order to rescue a stranded individual and bring them back to base.

  2. Mouse Maze
Learning objectives: Learn how to take input from the environment and take action based on sensory data.
Goal: Students will have to design and build a robot that will be able to take and respond to input from its environment and find its way through the maze.

  3. Robot Sumo
Learning objectives: Students will use the knowledge they have gained from previous projects and additional and more complex sensors to construct robots that are both robust and spatially aware
Goal: Teams of students will compete in a robot sumo tournament. Student teams will create a fully autonomous robot with the goal of pushing the other robot out of the circle while maintaining their position in the circle.

Calling all artists! Every child has the ability to create a masterpiece, but sometimes we need a starting point and the opportunity to grow. This fun and dynamic course allows your child to hone in on their artistic abilities and learn how to draw and create a work of art by following step-by-step directions. We will be learning to draw different animals and seasonal creations and following and then adding oil pastel and watercolor.  This course allows your child to practice their ability to follow one and two step directions, work on their fine motor development, and have fun in the process. Hopefully some frame-worthy work will be coming your way.

If your Kindergartner attends EDCC, Ms. McCrory will pick up and drop off students at EDCC at the beginning and end of the class.  Please complete EDCC’s pickup form if you enroll your child in this class.

Come and learn Hindustani Classical Vocal Music (singing) from scratch! Hindustani Classical Music has a rich tradition, which originated in South Asia and it can now be enjoyed in all corners of the world. This is a great opportunity for kids because, in addition to being a fun activity, learning music has multiple benefits including the following:

  • It helps develop the parts of the brain related to language and reasoning
  • It relieves stress and teaches children to focus
  • It can improve children’s social skills and boost their confidence

This Hindustani Classical Vocal Music course does not need any prior knowledge of or training in any kind of music. At the very beginning of the course, we give significant emphasis on perfecting the Seven Swaras (i.e., musical notes). This is done by learning to sing repetitive patterns of the Seven Swaras called Alankars. Students are taught to coordinate their singing with the Harmonium played by the teacher, along with the Electronic Tabla for percussion support. After perfecting the Swaras, the students will follow a simple structure, which is especially geared towards new learners. Under this structure students learn to sing a Sargam Geet or a Swara Malika, first. As students become more adept and comfortable with the structure of Classical singing, we introduce them to the five-note scale of Raga Bhupali. Towards the end of the course students will learn a Chota Khayal (i.e., a complex composition) in Raga Bhupali.

The last class in the session will include a vocal music performance by the student group which can be enjoyed by friends and family.

A classroom escape room is a series of obstacles or challenges that students complete as a team in a specific amount of time (typically 45 - 60 minutes long). Escape Room is a great way for students to learn about new content and use their thinking skills to solve puzzles and riddles.

During the escape room challenge students will use their academic skills to read passages closely, think critically, answer comprehension questions, and use math skills to decipher challenging and fun puzzles! While working as a team, students will develop their intrapersonal skills such as communication and growth mindset as they journey together on this joint effort. The classroom teacher will be there to guide and support students along the path to solving these fun and challenging tasks. Escape or not - students are bound to have lots of fun in an interactive environment!

Additionally, students who are quick problem solvers will have access to google classroom to play an ongoing digital escape room or will be given tools to design their own escape room and challenges.

From fitness dice, to agility ladders, to cupstacking, cornhole, we’ll move from larger scale games to small sided/ dual sport games. This focus gives students more opportunities to increase their athleticism while working together. Please join us to build your bodies and brains to the next level! This class will be outdoors, weather permitting.

Why can this class help? We know that exercise produces endorphins and mood boosting properties, promotes sleep and better eating habits. Young children benefit from calisthenics and training to create more bone mass in elementary years. Studies have shown that young children who make a habit to be active are more likely to carry on activity into teenage and early adulthood.

This course will enable your child to:

  1. Improve cardiovascular fitness and strength.
  2. Build manipulative and fine motor skills!
  3. Build deeper connections with peers in a friendly, close knit environment.
  4. Maintain overall health, providing a positive and consistent mental/emotional outlet to stressors of daily life.
