STEAM Elementary Summer Camp

Summer 2024

We are delighted to be able to offer the 2024 Elementary Summer Academy in-person at Fallon Middle School.  We have one, two and three week enrichment courses during the summer to students in 2nd to 5th Grades.  Our enrichment courses will be open to students from all school districts.

Grades stated in the course descriptions are for the 2023 - 2024 school year.  Please enroll your student accordingly.

UPDATED: COVID INFORMATION as at June 3, 2022

Following the Alameda County Press Release on June 2, 2002, masks are now required for indoor settings which include our DPIE Summer school.  Click here for the full press release.

Due to the spike in COVID cases nation-wide this spring, DPIE is strongly recommending that all students who participate in the DPIE Middle and Elementary Summer  Camps on the Fallon Middle School campus wear masks while in the classroom. We realize this may be a bit of an inconvenience for some of you, but the safety of your student and of all students is of primary concern to us.  All DPIE teachers will be wearing masks as well during instructional periods.

DPIE will have hand sanitizer in each classroom for student and staff use during class sessions and protocols will be in place to isolate and contact parents immediately if a student exhibits signs of COVID during class time.

What if my student has COVID?
If a student tests positive for COVID while at home, please email or call the DPIE Principal, Mr. Josh Holbak at holbakdpie.org (we will share a phone number prior to the start of the summer program
) to let him know .  Mr. Holbak will inform your students teacher of your students’s situation. Because DPIE Middle and Elementary Summer Camps are enrichment courses generally lasting one, two or three weeks, it is unlikely that a student who is diagnosed with COVID will be able to complete class and a DPIE representative will work with parents to determine the best way to move forward.

If a Student or teacher tests positive for COVID ...
-  Stay home for at least 5 days. (Link to CDC Flyer)
-  Isolation can end after day 5 if symptoms are not present or are resolving and a diagnostic specimen* collected on day 5 or later tests negative.
-  If unable to test or choosing not to test, and symptoms are not present or are resolving, isolation can end after day 10.
-  If fever is present, isolation should be continued until fever resolves.
-  If symptoms, other than fever, are not resolving, continue to isolate until symptoms are resolving or until after day 10.
-  Wear a well-fitting mask around others for a total of 10 days, especially in indoor settings.

*Antigen test preferred.

Not only will this class keep the kids stimulated and busy, but they will be participating in important healthy lifestyle lessons in a way that they won’t know is educational.

From making healthy smoothies to taking mindful walks, everyday we will engage your student in a new aspect of being healthy in a fun way while they build a healthy, lifestyle toolbox full of recipes, self-awareness, as well as stress management and coping skills. Students will leave the program excited and motivated to care for their bodies and brain as they gain positive skills they can use for life.

This class will be interactive, fun, and hugely beneficial. They will learn essential health information relevant to caring for their growing minds and bodies through daily lessons focused on the following areas: nutrition, physical activity, stress management, resilience building and self-awareness. Through the use of a 7-foot doll, affectionately named "Stuffee," kids get an anatomically correct, but animated look at what organs exist inside their bodies and how food passes through it. Kids are told to eat healthy, be active and to not smoke, but they aren’t usually told why these healthy lifestyle choices are so important.

Lessons with Stuffee helps illustrate the importance and reasons behind why we nag our kids about nutritionand activity. We also lay the groundwork for essential understanding of care for the importanceof their ever changing, growing brain and why they must care for it with healthy living.

As for their brain and mental health, participants will be able to identify at least 3 healthy coping strategies for themselves with a clear understanding of how and why these strategies are essential for mental and physical health. In addition, they will recognize at least 2 ways stress can be healthy and helpful to them per our popular "Make Stress Your Friend” lesson. Lastly, we will examine our strengths as an important tool to increase our self-awareness. By knowing our strengths we can use them for confidence and growth, and we can rely on and reflect upon our strengths to help us navigate our way through challenging times. Your child will have fun while strengthening their mind and body through healthy living lessons!

Time:                   10am - 11am
Duration:            9 x 1 hour
Room:
               TBA
Tuition:               $269

Course Description:
Come and learn Hindustani Classical Vocal Music (singing) from scratch! Hindustani Classical Music has a rich tradition, which originated in South Asia and it can now be enjoyed in all corners of the world. This is a great opportunity for kids because, in addition to being a fun activity, learning music has multiple benefits including the following:

  • It helps develop the parts of the brain related to language and reasoning
  • It relieves stress and teaches children to focus
  • It can improve children’s social skills and boost their confidence

This Hindustani Classical Vocal Music course does not need any prior knowledge of or training in any kind of music. At the very beginning of the course, we give significant emphasis on perfecting the Seven Swaras (i.e., musical notes). This is done by learning to sing repetitive patterns of the Seven Swaras called Alankars. Students are taught to coordinate their singing with the Harmonium played by the teacher, along with the Electronic Tabla for percussion support. After perfecting the Swaras, the students will follow a simple structure, which is especially geared towards new learners. Under this structure students learn to sing a Sargam Geet or a Swara Malika, first. As students become more adept and comfortable with the structure of Classical singing, we introduce them to the five-note scale of Raga Bhupali. Towards the end of the course students will learn a Chota Khayal (i.e., a complex composition) in Raga Bhupali.

The last class in the session will include a vocal music performance by the student group which can be enjoyed by friends and family.

Course Description:
Computer-aided design (CAD) is a technology that allows kids to create and design their own digital models using specialized software. With CAD, kids can bring their imaginations to life by creating 3D models of anything they can imagine using a 3D printer, from toys to houses to robots. By using a computer and mouse, kids can easily manipulate the shapes and details of their designs, making changes and improvements along the way. Whether they want to become engineers, architects, or product designers, CAD gives kids the opportunity to explore their creative side and learn valuable technical skills that will serve them well in the future.

  • Introduction to CAD
  • Creating and manipulating basic shapes, editing lines, use of grids,
  • Creating simple and complex models
  • Understanding all tools like loft, revolve, trim, draft, fillit, rib, ...
  • Design custom models in order to meet technical specifications.
  • Design custom models given a design statement
  • Practical CAD modeling, file formats for CAD,...
  • Custom design challenge day, and a small 3d print for kids to take home.

Overall, 3D models are valuable tools for visualization, communication, and design, allowing users to see and interact with their designs in a way that is not possible with traditional 2D drawings.

Do you have a budding engineer in your family and children who just can’t get enough of building and problem solving? Then the Advanced Lego Robotic course might be just the class you’re looking for. The Advanced Robotics course is designed for students who have already participated in our Beginning Lego & Robotics course as taught in the DPIE After School Program or a student who has already taken a basic robotics course and learned or is familiar with the basics of block coding. Working in teams, students will participate in an interactive engineering design process and will be challenged to construct more complex and dynamic robot projects that enable them to successfully complete a series of engineering challenges.

Challenges will include:

  1. Obstacle Course Learning
Objectives: How to utilize motors, sensors and other Lego parts to build a moving robot and program.
Goal: Kids will design a robot that will complete the obstacle course involving bridge, wall, river and other obstacles, in order to rescue a stranded individual and bring them back to base.

  2. Mouse Maze
Learning objectives: Learn how to take input from the environment and take action based on sensory data.
Goal: Students will have to design and build a robot that will be able to take and respond to input from its environment and find its way through the maze.

  3. Robot Sumo
Learning objectives: Students will use the knowledge they have gained from previous projects and additional and more complex sensors to construct robots that are both robust and spatially aware
Goal: Teams of students will compete in a robot sumo tournament. Student teams will create a fully autonomous robot with the goal of pushing the other robot out of the circle while maintaining their position in the circle.

Please note: To enroll in this course you MUST have first completed WeDo Lego Robotics for Elementary Students or been enrolled in Lego Robotics after school class.
