Accelerated Math Course 3

Math Course 3 Information

For the second straight year, DPIE will offer a year-long Math Course 3 for middle school students who wish to take Algebra 1 in the fall of the 2021 – 2022 school year. The Math Course 3 will be taught in a six-week, five hour per day virtual format with live instruction. Parents and students should be aware that the DPIE Math Course 3 is an accelerated course that will cover the equivalent of 5 days of material in one-day. Students who enroll in the program should be strong math students with excellent study habits that are motivated to succeed.  Students should come to class each day ready to work and expect to have 1 – 2 hours of homework outside the classroom each day.

Who Can Enroll in Math Course 3?

Math Course 3 Outline

Math Course 3 is designed to give students the skills necessary to be successful in high school mathematics.  Students will be learning topics in Algebra, Geometry and Statistics, with an emphasis on applications of these skills in real world problems and practice in critical thinking and problem solving.

In the summer DPIE Math Course 3 students will have:

  • 5 hours of live teacher instruction
  • daily virtual lectures, multiple daily assignments, formative assessments and student/teacher check-ins.
  • two to three online assessments per week, based on unit topics
  • a cumulative virtual final exam on July 9

We teach Math Course 3 as it is designed by the DUSD. Therefore, we asked our lead teachers for each course to design an online distance learning format that would provide the greatest opportunity for students to learn, succeed and to prepare them for the next course level.

 Materials:

  • computer with a working webcam and microphone
  • reliable internet access and a smartphone to submit assignments digitally
  • DUSD student email, which includes a Clever login to access some technology
  • binder paper, graph paper, pens/pencils/highlighters/erasers etc
  • optional: access to a printer and scanner is not mandatory but is extremely beneficial!

Class Details

  • Class instruction will begin each day at 8:30 am and class will end at 1:30 pm.
  • Each day, students will be provided lesson notes and practice problems.  These materials will provide students access to essential content and provide opportunities for students to learn and demonstrate their understanding.
  • Formal assessments throughout the 6-week course will be completed through selected online platforms that are designed to give students feedback for improvement.
  • Due to the online format of the course, students must be prepared to be more independent and take more ownership of their learning than they are used to in a traditional class setting.
    • Students are expected to complete the homework assignments before attending class the next day and come to class with questions ready about their homework assignments.
    • Teachers will support student learning during the hours of instruction and provide additional resources for student support outside of instructional hours.
    • Students are encouraged to advocate for themselves and ask questions to their instructors.

Assessments and Grading:

  • Student grades in Math Course 3 will be calculated in three different areas.
    • Homework – 10%
    • Class Work – 15%
    • Assessments – 75% (Assessments includes all quizzes, tests, mid-terms and the final)

Recommendations into Algebra 1:

  • To earn a recommendation into Algebra 1, students must earn a minimum of 86.5% on their final grade in DPIE’s Math Course 3.

Please be aware that DPIE has a strict “NO REFUND” policy, therefore, we strongly recommend you wait to hear from the DUSD for approval, prior to enrolling in Math Course 3.

You do not need district approval to take a DPIE Math Course 3 for enrichment.
