STEM Summer Programs - 2024

We are very pleased to bring our summer program to Dublin Unified School District for the 12th straight year. Please note that all DPIE Summer High School courses are the same courses taught at Dublin High School.

On March 16, 2017 the governing board of the Dublin Unified School District, following the guidelines of the UC systems “Principal’s Certification” process, passed resolution 2016-17-32 accepting all DPIE courses as their own and agreeing to issue credit and add them to student transcripts.

Who can enroll in the DPIE Summer High School Academy Program?

All Dublin students who will complete 8th – 11th grade at the end of the current school year and will attend school in the Dublin Unified School District next school year, are academically in “good standing,” meet the pre-requisites required to take a class and have been approved by DUSD counselors, may enroll in the DPIE program for course credit and receive   A-G UC admission credit towards college admission.

DPIE courses and grades can be added to a student’s high school transcript only if they have been approved to take the course over the summer for credit. Although DPIE partners with the Dublin School District and teaches the Dublin course of study, it is up to parents to decide if they wish the course grade to be added to their child’s high school transcript. Any passing grade “C” or better will be added to the transcript unless a parent emails us that they do not wish to add the grade to their student’s transcript.

Failing to add the grade to their student’s transcript will mean their student will need to repeat the class in the following school year.

Non-Credit Enrichment Enrollment – Students who wish to take DPIE courses over the summer for enrichment or preparation purposes only may enroll without prior approval and their grades will not be entered on their Dublin transcripts.

Dublin Students in grade 6 – 7 – By DUSD policy, students currently in grades 6 & 7 MAY NOT enroll in summer courses for acceleration purposes.

Non Dublin Students – Since DPIE is not a comprehensive high school we cannot issue an official transcript that can be used for college admission. Non-Dublin students may enroll in DPIE courses for enrichment purposes only unless they get consent from their home school district that they can have the course and grade added to the high school transcript in their district.  This process is known as the Principal’s Certification Process, which is part of the UC Admission Department’s policy. Your school district would have to agree to accept our course and grade as equivalent to their own and add the course to their high school transcript.

Can any Dublin student take a DPIE course for credit and advancement?

All Dublin students who wish to enroll in DPIE Summer High School courses for advancement must submit the online “Alternative Credit Application Form” which will go live on February 1, 2024. The form can be found below for your high school below.   Only students with a DUSD assigned email address can access and complete the form.

Courses and grades will not appear on your student’s transcript unless they are approved to take the class by their school’s counselor.


Physical Education Course Information
Physical Education credit earned during the Summer counts toward the completion of the second year of the two-year PE requirement and does not satisfy the requirement of Physical Education for freshman. State of California Ed Code requires all freshman to take Physical Education in their freshman year. Incoming 9th grade students may still enroll in DPIE’s Physical Education classes for credit.

Can my student enroll in the DPIE Summer High School Academy purely for enrichment purposes?

The DPIE Summer High School Academy will be taught at Dublin High School. Each school day will feature a five-hour live instructional program from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm with a 15 minute break midway through the day.

Why do I have to pay to enroll my student in the DPIE Summer High School Academy program?

The State of California does not fund summer courses for any California public school district. DPIE is a not-for-profit educational foundation that offers summer courses as a service to Dublin families.  Without your fees, there could not be a DPIE Summer High School Academy. The good news is that our fees are significantly lower than both private and public options in the Bay Area and run $700 to $2,000 less than nearby programs.

What does the enrollment fee cover?

DPIE charges a fee for the DPIE Summer High School Academy to pay the costs for teacher and staff salaries, additional mandatory employer expenses, administration, security, utilities, custodial services, supplies and rental of classroom facilities, textbooks, chrome books, and other related costs.

What method of payment do you accept?

When you enroll online, you will be required to pay the enrollment fee with your credit card. Our website is secure and encrypted so you can feel safe in paying online. Your card number is not stored. Please contact us if you need additional payment information or have payment questions.

Is Financial Aid available?

Yes, any Dublin family that qualifies for the National School Lunch program which provides free or reduced-price lunches to students can receive financial assistance. If you are already in the Free or Reduced Price Lunch program just email us the name of your child, their student ID number and school of attendance.  Once we have determined they are in the program, we will send you information to help you enroll your student in the class of their choice.  Students must still submit the Alternative Credit Application form for their high school to participate in the DPIE Summer High School Academy.

Does my student need to meet a certain grade criteria to qualify to enroll in the DPIE Summer High School Academy this summer?

The Dublin Unified School District has eliminated their grade requirement for participation in the DPIE Summer High School Academy.  Students who are in academically "good standing" and meet the prerequisite/essential skills for class participation will be allowed to enroll in the program.  You can find these details on the course page.

What is the refund policy if we change our mind or my student’s grades drop?

DPIE has a “NO REFUND” policy in place so we recommend you only make the decision to enroll if you are confident your student is academically in "good standing" and meets the pre-requisites/essential skills as established by the school district for each course and you have submitted an Alternate Credit Application. Special Note: Refunds will not be given to families who simply change their minds once they have enrolled in the program.  However, DPIE will work with families whose student was in "good standing" at the time of their enrollment, but were not given final approval to take a course in the summer.

My student has an IEP or a 504 Plan, can I enroll them in the summer program?

 If you have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 plan set up by a California school district, you MUST reach out to DPIE staff and share the IEP or 504 Plan to determine if we can accommodate the student’s need in our program. Enrollment in our program is provisional until we have made this determination as this is an accelerated learning environment that may not be compatible with your student’s needs.

How do I enroll my student in the DPIE Summer High School Academy?

Enrollment in our program takes place online via our website. Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis, as determined by the date and time stamp at the completion of enrollment. Enrollment is capped in each class so please consider enrolling early. Once a class is filled, a waitlist will be generated for the next class. If enough students are on the waitlist, another course will be opened, students will be added from the waitlist and parents will be contacted and instructed to pay the enrollment fee to ensure a spot in the class.

 

Once you have completed enrollment you will receive an email receipt.  You will receive a second notification once the class has filled, a teacher has been hired and we have determined the course will be moving forward.

Enrollment is OPEN from February 1st, 2024.

What do I need to know about enrolling my student in DPIE Summer High School courses?

Students must be in "good standing" (C or above) in school to enroll in any courses offered in the DPIE Summer High School Academy and should have submitted the Alternative Credit Application Form required by the school district.

Please be aware, the DPIE Summer High School Academy is an accelerated program that covers 5 days of material in one-day, students should be strong students who come ready to work. Its normal to expect 1-4 hours of homework outside of the classroom each night. Some students report that it takes them longer to complete all assigned work.

If my student performs well and is approved by Dublin High School, will they be allowed to advance to the next course level?

Yes, according to Dublin Unified School District Administration, students who pass courses taken in the DPIE Summer High School Academy will be allowed to have their grades added to their high school transcript and advance to the next course level in the next school year.

Students will earn 10 credits for full-year courses and 5 credits for semester courses, which goes towards the 240 credit graduation requirement by the DUSD.  By DUSD policy, students can only accumulate 40 credits from courses outside the school district.

Your Literature indicates that the DPIE Summer High School Academy meets the UC Systems A – G Requirements

So, why isn’t the DPIE Summer High School Academy listed on their Approval List?

All DPIE Summer High School Academy courses meet the curriculum guidelines of the Dublin Unified School District. The Dublin School Board passed resolution, # 2016-17-32, allowing DPIE courses and grades to be added to Dublin High transcripts and therefore, are approved and meet the A-G requirements for UC admission. 

This process, known as "Principal's Certification" was created by the UC system’s Admissions department in support of supplementary programs like the DPIE Summer High School Academy.  UC recognizes that the DPIE Summer High School Academy is accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools & Colleges) just like Dublin High and we offer the same courses as offered by Dublin High School.

When may I enroll my student in the DPIE Summer High School Academy?

You may enroll your student in the DPIE Summer High School Academy as soon as enrollment opens.  However, you must have submitted the Alternate Credit Application form  if your student is taking the class for credit and advancement which is below.

Only families who are confident their student is academically in "good standing" and meets the prerequisite/essential skills required for a class should enroll in the DPIE Summer High School Academy prior to receiving the counselor’s approval.

When will I receive my student’s schedule?

You will receive several emails from DPIE between the time you enroll and the time the summer program begins which are detailed below. 

  1. You will receive a enrollment email receipt upon enrollment in the program. 

  2. You will receive another email as soon as the class has received enough enrollment to move forward for the summer and a teacher has been hired to teach the course.  

  3. About a week before the DPIE Summer High School Academy begins, you will receive notification of your teacher assignment, room allocation and a map of the school.

  4. Additional emails will be sent during the DPIE Summer High School Academy to inform you of any program updates.

  5. If you are waitlisted - you will be sent and email once the class you enrolled your student in has enough enrollments to move forward and a teacher has been hired to lead the class.  You can use that email as confirmation that your class is moving forward.

What is the attendance policy?

  • All students MUST attend the last day of their assigned class so they can take their final exam. Students must successfully complete the final exam in order to successfully complete the class. 

  • Any student not in attendance on the first day needs to receive prior approval from DPIE Summer High School Academy Administration for the absence or they will be dropped in favor of a student on the waiting list. 

  • Excused absences must be agreed to in advance with Academy Administration. Students are generally not allowed more than 1 ½ days of absence in any 3-week semester. Students are not allowed more than 3 days of absence when enrolled in a 6-week program without prior consent of Academy Administration. Two tardies equal one ½ day absence. It is very important that your student be on time and available for the full session to be successful at such an accelerated pace. 

Important Note: Each day in the DPIE Summer High School Summer Academy is the equivalent of one week of instruction in the regular school year.  Students who miss one day of class is missing the equivalent of one week of school and are not likely to be successful in the program.

Do we have to submit our student’s final grade and credit on their Dublin High School transcript?

No you do not!  Since DPIE is a separate organization from the school district, it will be up to parents to decide if they want the grades earned in the DPIE Summer High School Academy to be added to their student's transcript. However, passing grades (C- or better) will automatically be uploaded to your student’s transcript in August or September.

Any parent who does not want their student’s grade uploaded will need to let us know via email prior to August 1st to ensure that Dublin High School does not upload your student’s grade to their transcript. Any student whose DPIE Summer High School Academy grade is not uploaded to their Dublin High transcript will be required to take the course over at Dublin High School in the next school year.

How can I get a copy of my grade report?

The Parent Portal will remain open for a week after all final grades have been recorded and families will be able to check their student's grades through the portal. Since you will have access to the parent portal, throughout the summer program, DPIE will not send out progress or report cards during the DPIE Summer High School Academy. Passing grades will automatically be uploaded to your student’s transcript in August or September unless a parent requests otherwise.

 

Any parent who does not want their student’s grade uploaded, will need to let us know via email prior to August 1st to ensure that Dublin High does not upload your child’s grade to their transcript.

How do I order additional transcripts?

Since your student’s grades are automatically uploaded to their DUSD high school transcript, you will not need to order transcripts for a DPIE course.

How can I monitor my student’s performance in the class during the summer program?

DPIE will use Infinite Campus to record all course grades during our six-week Academy and parents will be able to monitor student progress via the same parent portal they use during the regular school year. The portal will remain open until August 1.

May our student take more than one class at the same time in the DPIE Summer High School Academy?

DPIE Summer High School Academy classes run for five hours per day, therefore, students will only have the time to take one year-long course in our Summer Academy.

Will Food Services be Provided at DHS?

Breakfast and Brunch will be provided free to all students everyday of the DPIE High School Summer Academy.

Breakfast will be served from 8am to 8:30am

Brunch will be served from 10am to 11:30am, which means during the break of 11am to 11:20am, students will be able to get food.

What are the pre-requisites and grade criteria required for approvals?

 Math Pre-Requisites and Grade Criteria

*NOTE: Students may only take one Algebra based course for acceleration through DPIE. They can take either Algebra 1 or Algebra 2/Trigonometry in DPIE, but they cannot take both classes through any Summer program.

** Math students who do not earn the minimum grade requirements to have their grades automatically added to their high school transcript and move on to the next course level, may appeal  to have their grades counted and to move onto the next course level by completing the Dublin High School Waiver form. As a convenience, the Waiver form will be distributed by DPIE via email to the families of all math students enrolled in the Academy during the last week of the summer session. The waivers can be turned into your DPIE math teacher and they will be collected and given to the head of the DHS Math Department for review.

Science Pre-Requisites & Grade Criteria

 Biology

  • Student must be entering grades 9 or 10 in the Fall (2020 – 2021 school year).
  • Students wanting to enroll in this class must have a strong “B” or better in both their current science and English classes.

Note: Students enrolling in the Biomedical Academy must take this class during the regular school year and cannot take this class in the Summer.

Honors Chemistry

  • Successful completion of or concurrently enrolled in Alg.2/Trig class.
  • Successful completion of Biology.

Physical Education and Elective Courses

  • Students who want to enroll in Physical Education or Elective programs do not need prior approval from the high school and may register as soon as registration opens on January 29, 2020.
  • Physical Education credit earned during the Summer counts toward the completion of the Sophomore PE requirement and does not satisfy the requirement of Physical Education for Freshman. This means all freshman will be required to take Physical Education in their Freshman year.

What if my child does not meet the grade criteria by the end of the first semester, can they still participate in the program for course credit if their grades improve?

 Students who not meet the grade criteria at the end of the first semester will have their grades re-evaluated by Dublin High at the end of the 3rd and 4th quarters.  If their grades improve and they meet the grade criteria as required by DHS policy, they will be notified that they have been approved and they can then enroll in the course they applied for.

What if my student does well on the Spring Math Assessment?

DPIE understands that the Dublin Unified School District will administer a math placement assessment in mid-April and results will be shared with parents in early May. We realize that some students will do well enough on the assessment that they will be placed into Advanced Algebra 1 and those students will not be required to take Math Course 3 during the summer.  However, DPIE cannot wait until May to hire math instructors to teach our summer courses, so please be aware that if you choose to enroll your child in Math Course 3 with us prior to receiving the results of the math placement assessment, we have a strong NO REFUND Policy.

NO REFUND POLICY AND PROCESS

The only source of funding that DPIE receives to pay teacher salaries, custodial services, campus supervision, administration, supplies and rent are the enrollment fees we charge for the program.  DPIE hires teachers as soon as classes fill so we can hire the best teaches available to lead our courses. Once those teachers are hired, we are legally obligated to pay them.

Therefore, if you enroll in Math Course 3 with us and then learn in May that your child performed well enough on the math assessment to be placed in Advanced Algebra 1 for the 2020-2021 school year your options are listed below:

  1. Stay in the Class - DPIE encourages you to keep your child enrolled in the program so they can learn the concepts that were not taught in Math Course 2.  The Math Course 3 concepts we teach during the summer will be vital to your child’s success in Advanced Algebra 1 and passing the assessment does not mean your child fully understands those concepts.

  2. Waitlist Refund – If you decide you don’t want to keep your child in the Math Course 3 program because they have been recommended for enrollment in Advanced Algebra I, we will be glad to refund you all but the $75 enrollment fee charged by the online registration company IF we can find a student on the waitlist to replace your child in the class. The registration company will not refund the fee for any reason.

  3. No-one on Waitlist? – We will consider providing you with a partial credit on your account that can be used by any of your children for any DPIE sponsored program. The amount of the credit will depend on the loss the program incurs because of your decision to withdraw your child.

Which grade levels may enroll in the high school STEM Enrichment Academy?

 Students currently enrolled in grades 7-11 may enroll in the high school program for credit and course advancement pending approval from Dublin High School.
